Dylan/Nobel Prize/Portfolios

Morning Reflection:
Do you think Bob Dylan deserves the Nobel Prize?  What does that say about the nature of literature and songwriting as a "fine art"?

Listen to Dylan music.  Read articles.  Look over lyrics:

  1. Bob Dylan did deserve the Nobel prize because song lyrics is a form of poetry. When lyricists write lyrics for a certain main idea of a song, they use different types of ways to impact the one who reads or listen to the lyrics. The lyricist could use metaphor to make the lyrics of his song not that literal. He could have also used imagery to cause an emotion on a reader. To me, poetry is used as a way to express which is also a way to express yourself, but with music. The nature of 'fine art' in songwriting and literature is similar because they all express what the writer is feeling and express different non-literal elements to show the reader/listener a different perspective.

  2. In my opinion I do think that Bob Dylan deserved this Nobel Prize. After looking over his work I noticed that Dylan is very descriptive with his songs. He seems to take certain topics going on in the world and writing songs about them and people really seem to notice this happening, and they really admire this. He's a very inspirational song writer. It's as if he were a poem or a very great writer.

  4. Of course he didn't deserve it, although he had two good songs the other ones make no sense like "Wiggle Wiggle." I have never thought of a song writer as a person who could win this type of award. "Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle in your boots and shoes
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, you got nothing to lose
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, like a swarm of bees
Wiggle on your hands and knees" - The recent winner of the Nobel Literature Prize.

    1. I respect his work though. He isn't that bad of an artist, but I feel that better people that could have been chosen.

  5. Although he might've had a few songs that weren't that well, I think Bob Dylan deserved the prize. Obviously music is a poetry and lyric. Dylan's work was was really good and it was inspiring at a time of need.

  6. Yeah, I'd say Dylan deserved the reward. It's not like songwriting can't be considered literature. I don't really care what people think about the songs themselves. It's the fact that people think he didn't deserve it because he's a musician that annoys me.

  7. I respect Bob Dylan as a musician. I enjoy some of Bob Dylan's work. However, lyrics always come second to music. Always. If I were Japanese, I would still enjoy Subterranean Homesick Blues without knowing what he's saying. That aside, Bob Dylan is not that great of a lyricist, and does not deserved to be the first musician honored with the Noble Literature Prize. Take some of his greatest songs, "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Subterranean Homesick Blues". Both have a flow-of-consciousness lyrical pattern, and really don't mean much in the end. Great songs, though. Let's look upon some of his other lyrics:
"You know I love her yeah I love her
I'm in love with the ugliest girl in the world."

    Need I say more?

In turn, I believe there are many more artists that could have been and should have been honored before him, both alive and dead. Some of them are listed below, in no particular order:

    - Paul McCartney
    - John Lennon
    - Michael Nesmith
    - Rick Nielsen
    - Brian Wilson
    - Neville Holder
    - John Fogerty
    - Jim Lea
    - George Harrison
    - Keith Richards
    - Gerry Coffin
    - Carole King
    - Chuck Berry
    - Tommy Boyce
    - Bobby Hart
    - Rogers and Hammerstein
    - and hell, even Harry Nilson.

    1. "What if Kanye made a song about Kanye
Called "I Miss The Old Kanye"? Man, that'd be so Kanye
That's all it was Kanye, we still love Kanye
And I love you like Kanye loves Kanye"

I think that says enough to disqualify him.

  8. Yes, I do believe that Bob Dylan deserved the Noble prize because he was an inspiration to others. Being that he was able to put words together in a lyrical way that some people wouldn't have thought of.

  9. I think Bob Dylan deserved the award. His music was extremely influential and continues to be. Although I feel their are plenty other artists that did just as much as he did, if not more, I still feel he deserved it.
