From previous post, read Italo Calvino and/or Junot Diaz. Post a comment about the short story
you read. Was the use of 2nd person POV effective? How was the second person POV used?

ReplyDeleteIn Italo Calvino's short story, I found the second person point of view to be quite effective. The way that it was written made it out to be kind of a step by step guide on what to do when reading, what to do before reading, and even telling you exactly what's going to happen when your reading in a specific setting. I felt as if it was being directed towards me and that appears to be the approach with this style of writing; to make it seem as if the reader is reading a story about themselves.
ReplyDeletethe stories used 2nd person to somewhat address the reader by saying "you" constantly. Using "you" all the time can seem like an instruction manuel
ReplyDeleteIn Junot Diaz's short story Alma I thought it was very interesting how most of the story revolved around someone else, and the portrait of that person. This story could have been told in another POV but I think the use of 2nd person made it more impactful and interesting. The readers were put into the character of a cheater, which isn't always expected.
ReplyDeleteToday in class I read Italo Calvino and after reading Immediately thought Calvino use of second person was very effective. It was effective because I felt that the text was speaking directly to me. Calvino used second person to tell me or any reader step by step how I should write, what I should do before reading, and even what is happening in the setting I could be reading in. The expert from his novel even started out by basically saying that this piece should have all my attention.
ReplyDeleteTHE STORY WAS INTERESTING AND HELPED ME GET A BETTER GRIP ON HOW TO DO MY 2ND PERSON STORY IN THE FUTURE.

ReplyDeleteThe second person perspective in Italo Calvino's short story forces you to draw connections to your own life and makes the experiences very relevant. You cannot be a passive reader because you are the protagonist so you are immediately invested in the story.
ReplyDeleteItalo Calvino's, I thought his use of the 2nd person was effective because it really made me feel like he was talking to me. It helped me sink into the story and imagine myself in the setting.
ReplyDeleteI read Junot Diaz's short story, Alma. I felt like I was reading a visual novel video-game and not a story. That being said, it is good writing, but the second person aspect doesn't really feel like it's applying to me. It had a strong body but I feel like I don't understand some of the characters' motives.
ReplyDeletewith junot diaz's story the 2nd person perspective makes you feel apart of it. it paints you as the "you" character putting you in their shoes. with this story "you" being the cheater makes you feel it since its directing towards 2nd person.
ReplyDeletei like the story it was a good story junot diaz's story twas in 2nd person perspective and made me feel like I was in the story and apart of it. calvino's story made me feel like I was talking to him face to face.
ReplyDeletewhen i read the story it really caught my attention they way he used 2nd person was effective because it really caught my attention and made me feel like i was in the story like he was speaking to me it made me feel like he was in my head speaking to me you know?
ReplyDeleteThe story did a good job at making you feel like the story was written for the reader. The author did a good job at using second person in the story. The second story was not as powerful with the second story like the first one was.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading both stories(Junot Diaz's Alma and Italo Calvino's), I felt I was in the stories itself. I was immersed in the story and 2nd perspective definitely worked and worked effectively to me. The stories being so direct is what I think is the major part that makes the reader feel immersed in the stories. This direct "you" makes YOU connect and relate to the story itself. This is very well shown in Calvino's short story. you makes you the character.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion I would say that the use of Calvino's 2md person point of view was effective in getting me (the reader) to feel as if instead of reading I was listening to a lecture coming straight from the narrator. He used this strategy by introducing me to the book that "Calvino" has created and telling me how to read, this works using the word you repeatedly throughout the story.
ReplyDeleteIn Calvino's story, he used the second person view and it worked well with the story. It helped understand the story better because i felt that he was talking to me.
ReplyDeleteBoth of the stories made me feel like I was living the story myself or as if the author was speaking to me.Almost like when we watch moves and feel the same things the characters are feeling or the feeling as if we are in the movie itself.
