5. Read aloud from text: Ch. 1 and 2. Discussion questions.
1. As Starr and Khalil listen to Tupac, Khalil explains what Tupac said “Thug Life” meant. Discuss the meaning of the term “Thug Life” as an acronym and why the author might have chosen part of this as the title of the book. In what ways do you see this in society today? (Chapter 1, p. 21)

2. Chapter 2 begins with Starr flashing back to two talks her parents had with her when she was young. One was about sex (“the usual birds and bees”). The second was about what precautions to take when encountering a police officer (Chapter 2, p. 24). Have you had a similar conversation about what to do when stopped by the police? Reflect upon or imagine this conversation.

  1. my thoughts on the black lives matter thing are.....I think its interesting but at this point nothing is happening but people like us are not gonna give up on what we put so much work into so we are gonna keep trying until we get what we want and that is justice for black people. back then people tried so hard and never gave up even if it took years and I think something like that is going to happen this year I like what they are doing and they should keep doing it.

  2. I've always admired the black lives matter movement. I feel as if it is bringing great change to society, a change this world needs. It's finally bringing attention to the discrimination black people deal with day by day. I'm very proud of everyone who has spoke out against the injustice that black people face. There has been too many incidents where black people have been treated poorly but they still go unnoticed. Black people deserve to be treated equally and should get the justice they deserve and hopefully they'll finally receive it.

  3. The video was good to watch because it brought up "rebuttals" to claims that the #blacklivesmatter is violent or stupid or doesn't matter. I've always believed in the black lives matter movement and am very proud to be apart of it. I just never knew what to say to people who think the hashtag is unnecessary. It's clear that many black people are treated poorly in this country and anyone who doesn't think so is showing blatant ignorance. At the stage we're in in this country, if you don't work for change or at least believe things should change you're showing blatant ignorance as well.

  4. I feel mad and sad at the same time that this movement even has to exist. Why can't people just look at others and see it as...just human? No colors, no culture, just humans. I doesn't matter what your religion is or if you are black, you are just human and every human is equal. Everybody should be treating each other the same whether they are the same ethnicity or not.

  5. Black Lives Matter should have never been a huge problem to begin with, It is honestly sad that us black people are still being treat as if we are not human. We should have equal right as someone who is not of our color. I like what Black Lives Matter is all about. To protective, appreciate, and notice everything African Americans do. I wish I seen more people who were really dedicated to this movement in Rochester. Even though, in Rochester it is not that much of a problem we can still let the other states know we move together as people with the color of our skin.

  6. I think the movement is good for African Americans because its bringing attention to black lives. I feel like they're providing a voice for all the blacks around the world and telling the world that our life is just as equal as anyone else no matter the color. That we shouldn't be treated different because the color of our skin and what we look like and because of that when people take innocent black lives, that's saying their life doesn't matter as much as theirs. I feel like black lives matter movement is so much deeper than just black lives matter. Its why they matter and its another example of racism in this century.

  7. I thought the things that she was saying was quite insightful. I've seen a lot of negative response towards the movement and this was really my first time, hearing about the movement from the perspective of one of the founders. i strongly believe in the movement and seeing how this movement has united people across the nation and is being conveyed in a peaceful manner, gives me hope for the future. I believe that the Black Lives Matter movement will not only bring us a step forward to equality, but it'll empower young black children and give them the courage and strength they need to make a name for themselves in this harsh world.

  8. It was interesting to see how the founder of the #blacklivesmatter movement felt about the protest and the varying tactics of the people involved in the movement. It seems to that the interviewer was trying to incriminate the interviewee and get her to say that she supports violent acts of protest 100 percent. Asking those sort of questions seem to be a requirement for an interviewer but it makes me feel a bit weird about the interview itself. It was a well made video though and an interesting start to the year in craft of writing. I'm excited for tomorrow's morning reflection. --Valerie Viau

  9. I think that the video was very interesting and that the founder had some really good points when she was being interviewed. One of the points she said that caught my attention was when the lady interviewing her asked her how she felt about the protesters smashing windows and the founder said that the feeling is worse when another life is lost in the streets. Overall I think the video was really good.

  10. I think that the movement is very important too have. its a movement showing the race standing up for it self and standing together for a message, to spread and voice how they feel. it is important for people to have a voice and stand up for them selves against discrimination. the movement itself deserves the recognition it gets because its spreading a powerful message.

  11. Based on the video I just watched with an interview between Alicia Garza the founder of Black Lives Matter and the lady interviewing, it sounds like Alicia has a wide variety of feelings surrounding how people are responding towards police brutality specifically towards black people(young and old). She has respect for elder leaders who are standing up once more to promote black lives and she also not only tolerates the vandalism backlash after another black life is either messed with or lost without any police re precautions. I feel as if it is unjust and people have every right to respond in their own way.

  12. the video was informing us that the black lives matter movement has been turned bitter sweet it was formed because of young black people being murdered because of racist and unjust ways. But people have spun it and made things like #alllivesmatter and other things like #bluelives matter. Some people have mixed emotions about like weather it has a negative or positive affect on the community.some hashtags that are being made the black lives movement community look down upon because it is just being made to try to silence the black lives matter movement for example the #bluelivesmatter. The #bluelivesmattermovement was made because officers claimed that their lives are being put in danger because of riots and things being started not only because of the black lives matter movement but in general.

  13. Black lives matter started as a hashtag and became an organization. They probably became a big thing because of all of the attention that they were getting on the internet. They probably did not expect it to become this big because they started it on social media. It was a good video because they explained the details about it.

  14. What I took away from that video was that the Black Lives Matter movement is demanding specific things, like police accountability, and data on police brutality. Also I like how she put her statement on if the window smashing was too much. Sometimes I feel like people try to slow down progress by saying that it gets too violent and that's the opposite of what needs to be accomplished. When the interviewer brought up the #alllivesmatter, I think that the co-founder did a great way of explaining why that's not what our society needs right now. I feel as if that's just another way of diminishing the movement, and taking away from the ultimate goal. The specific things that people are pushing for, is a good tactic, and I didn't really know that there was a way that people had proposed to go about solving the problem.

  15. I think that one of the best things about the Black Lives Matter movement is that it comes directly from young black people for young black people. So many of the reforms and charities that are trying to address the disparity and violence towards black people is run and orchestrated by old white people who will never be able to fully understand the issues first hand. I think that if there is going to be change, the people who are being oppressed have to be the ones that tell us what is needed and white people need to listen and do everything in their power to assist, but not take over the movement. I think that the Black Lives Matter Movement can make this happen if white people will just listen to what they have to say.
